What is Ceremonial Cacao?

Ceremonial cacao is pure cacao bean paste. When prepared in the traditional way, cacao beans are hand picked, lightly roasted over a fire, then milled into powder or combined into paste. The minimal processing allows the cacao to retain a ton of antioxidants and qualities that make it so sensational.

It’s much different from the cacao powder (or cocoa) you find in the grocery store. Ceremonial cacao is prepared in a sacred and traditional way- I highly recommend you try the real deal if you haven’t yet!

Cacao Recipe for Daily Ritual

Though I don’t drink ceremonial cacao everyday, I drink it 2-3 times (sometimes more) per week. Depending on my intention, I most often use this cacao recipe to keep things simple, unless I have a specific ritual planned.

I usually drink cacao before I write, or on days where I need some extra grounding and spiritual support.

Simple and Mindful Daily Cacao Recipe

Ingredients:

Tools:

Instructions:

1.Heat your water using a kettle. I prefer this method because it makes it easier to pour small amounts of water at a time into your ceremonial mug.

2. Add 3 TBSP of ceremonial cacao to your mug, and if wanted, the TBSP of honey.

3. Once the water is ready, pour a splash of it into your mug.

*Tip: it doesn’t need to be boiling, if the water is too hot you may lose or weaken some of the positive qualities in the cacao

4. Combine the splash of water with the cacao and honey until it becomes a smooth paste. You want all the cacao butter to melt in order to help keep the cacao from separating when you add more water, although using a handheld frother can help with this regardless.

5. Once your cacao looks smooth, you can add more water in increments (this makes it more intentional and helps avoid cacao separating) or you can fill with water then use your frother to combine everything into the perfect consistency.

6. Say a prayer, affirmation, or gratitude over your cup of cacao before enjoying.

3 Different Ways to Prepare Cacao

1.Hot Water Kettle + Hand Mixing Ground Cacao

This is the method I tend to use and the one I’ve recommended in the recipes above.

2. Boiling Milk or Water

Another common way of preparing cacao is by putting either water or milk in a pot on the stove, then allowing it to become warm (not boiling) and adding the cacao into the pot while stirring to together as the cacao melts. Serve with a soup spoon.

3. Blender

You can also prepare your cacao by adding warm water and your ingredients (cacao, flower essences, additional herbs or powders, milk) into a blender and combining. This is a good method to use when you are preparing larger amounts of cacao for a ceremony or gathering, but also works great for a solo cacao ritual.

How to Chop Ceremonial Cacao

15 Ceremonial Cacao Recipes to Up-level Your Life: Ultimate Cacao Recipe Guide (9)

There are two ways I like to break apart my blocks of ceremonial cacao. See below:

1. Chefs board and chefs knife.

The first method is simply using a cutting board and chef’s knife.

Shop my favorite Chef’s Knife here: Wusthof 6” Chef Knife. Trust me, having a high quality knife makes all the difference when chopping your cacao, and honestly it’s a great way to up-level your kitchen!

2. Grating

The second method is by using a potato peeler or cheese grater and “grating” the cacao into small pieces.

I like this method because it tends to produce smaller bits of cacao that are a melt really easily, however I do find it to be more time consuming.

Hopefully you found a cacao recipe that inspires you here! How do you like to prepare your ceremonial cacao? Let me know!
